Mission Statement

The World Kinbaku Federation strives to protect and preserve authentic kinbaku as practiced in Japan.

Kinbaku/shibari (緊縛/縛り) has its roots in the ancient martial arts of hojojutsu/hobakujutsu (捕縄術/捕縛術) where the use of rope was one of the eighteen warrior skills (bugei juhappan, 武芸十八般) of the samurai.

It has evolved over the centuries from ukiyo-e (浮世絵, Japanese woodblock prints) and kabuki theater, through post-WWII print media and into modern practices.

With the advent of the video recorder, rope bondage started to seep into Japanese living rooms. This gave rise to a number of rope artists who laid the foundation of ‘modern’ kinbaku. These are the four recognized grandmasters: Osada Eikichi/長田英吉 (1925-2001), Akechi Denki/明智伝鬼 (1940-2005), Nureki Chimuo/濡木痴夢男 (1930-2013), and Yukimura Haruki/雪村春樹 (1948-2016).

With the dawn of the Internet, the art of Japanese rope bondage soon spread to the West and took the world of bondage fans by storm.

As kinbaku flourishes globally, the Federation endeavors to maintain purity and authenticity. We welcome those who resonate with this mission to join us.

Members will have access to rare video footage and other exclusive benefits.

Sincerely,

Osada Steve
